Abstract

With my experience with university, high school, primary school and kindergarten students who were trying to learn English and with my bilingual, bicultural nature, I tried to complete the phonetic puzzle’s missing pieces by designing a program suitable to a specific audience.

Writing and reading have been seen as a side accomplishment of language learning. That “It will be learned on the way” and that “teaching the alphabet is enough”. However, by the time students reach university, almost all of them have never seen a phonemic chart or have a clue that the English sounds are different even though they have been learning English for some time. Why do we just assume that students will learn how to write and read in English on their own?

The need to integrate writing and reading in the grade 1 program and the discovery of the fact that the products are not suitable, led me to the decision to design a phonics program that completes the missing pieces of the puzzle.
